Analyzing the mechanical, chemical, and electrical challenges of implementing active sensor meshes inside pocket-sized hardware.
In large 19-inch rackmount HSMs, engineers have ample space for multi-layer sensor enclosures, thick potting resin, and heavy thermal heat sinks. In a pocket-sized 120-gram device, every millimeter and gram is constrained. PortableHSM solves this through 3D flex-circuit active meshes wrapped tightly around the cryptographic core before high-pressure resin encapsulation.
The flexible sensor envelope contains hundreds of interwoven traces spaced less than 60 microns apart. Any mechanical tool (drill bit, scalpel, end-mill) attempting to penetrate the casing shorts or severs adjacent traces, triggering immediate crowbar discharge of internal key registers before the physical component can be reached.
PortableHSM has undergone rigorous military laboratory evaluation, surviving freezing in liquid nitrogen, exposure to corrosive chemical baths, and direct mechanical ballistic shocks without disclosing a single bit of internal key material.
